There is no one on this earth, who will say what Google is. Google was launched by Sergey Brin and Larry Page in 1998. I just think at times that did they even think that it is going to be the lifeline for many people and how it is going to make the world look so small. They now have over 32000 of
employees and make around $30 billion annually. They just started what seem to be magnanimous to us now, with a small thought of doing business. Some rules that Google follows and even we must.

1. Power of Simplicity

Simplicity has the great power of all. We heard it, but Google followed it. For them being simple means faster, easier and quality. That is the reason why they train their software developers on this policy first. They say that the finest of the product means it should be easy for the user, should not be stuffed with all the best in one, and must have the features the user needs to reach the desired results.

It is human tendency to show off the best they have, like the writers have the knack of using complicated and fancy words. But we all know that not everyone is tech savvy or a genius to know the entire vocab. But, the more effective way to reach your reader’s heart and mind is via simple language.

2. Team up

As per the Google founders life story, when they met each other they disliked and were in an argument. But there education and values brought them together. Later as they respected each other’s knowledge and excellence at par they teamed up in 1995 to work on an algorithm which can help rank the websites on the shared hyperlinks grounds. Though, it was Larry’s idea this was not possible without the mathematical wizard Sergey.

The strong Google algorithm was a result of two magnanimous people’s collaboration. This was impossible otherwise. It had also left behind Excite and Lycos.

The main reason behind Google’s success was the team work of the two and the kind of encouragement it spreads amongst its employees. From the start itself they believed in experimenting and came up with something called software development, here they used to collate information came from other programmers and often developed with something new.

Google as a company was growing faster but they still needed someone to take over and run it like a Corporation and so they took Eric Schmidt with them as a CEO of the company. He on the way acquired YouTube.

Giving space to the partner - As we speak of collaborating, it is not the key to success. There are people who have handled their company alone. It is about giving a person the liberty to perform they are best at. So even when a company is held by multiple owners and you see that it is a big success, understand that they have given the due respect to each, motivated one another and let them be.

3. Being great is not enough

It is Google’s policy again that the sky is the limit. Because when they started with their search engine in the year 1998, it was working great already. But the improvement in the algorithm just made it more advanced and ahead in the competition focusing on words put in for search.

Why Google was standing different from all was its advertising strategy which did not focus on spending millions on it, but just got famous by word of mouth.

As Google says that being good is not enough, it believes in focusing on one work. If it wanted, could have spread its arms in other directions as well. But it continued to master one field and make its search engine perfect.

It is Larry’s dream to have such a search engine which would understand everything and anything you put there and yet give you the right results. He quoted in the year 2004 that we are far away from that now. Then Google was not only the world’s best but they in that year exposed their IPO ‘of $23 billion. That attitude is the reason of their success and that’s how they have been shocking the world year after year.

You can be better and improved - There is always a scope of improvement even if that is the best you can deliver.

4. Give value cost-free

Larry says that they not only want to improve the services but people’s life as well. People actually don’t feel comfortable and don’t even like paying online and that is no issue for Google any ways, as it serves people the highest number of free services than anyone else online.

Their free services and software which are free for users but have actually cost them millions to develop are: Google Chrome, Earth, Docs Analytics, webmaster optimizer, Gmail and so on. Gmail here makes money by their advertising, but some don’t benefit them financially at all.

What more important to them is building brand loyalty. And they succeeded in it as they have a huge following, wherein people really wait for any update, any latest application and are most willing to share it with friends; not only that they are ok to pay for something that costs. Even I am one of them.
Give and take – Why do you think it is called a give and take policy and not a take and give?

Because, it should be the first rule of everyone’s life to be happy in life, give before expecting and as a human if you get anything of good value for free first you feel like returning the favor. That’s what Google followed and got a tremendous success.

5. Save the market

It was when Larry as a kid read a biography about the greatest of all Nikola Tesla, who was responsible to lay foundation of wireless technology, electric power and radio communication. Without which all communication couldn’t have come to life. The agony was, he died with no penny in his pocket.

It is indeed a valuable lesson for all of us, but Larry learnt to keep his ideas safe and secure. Google has taken it real serious. The PageRank algorithm which was done by Brin & Page when they were at Stanford was patent by the university which later Google bought the rights for 1.8 million shares from their stock.

That ways no company can use PageRank. And that is why Google leads. The latest news is that Google is now up with the government to guard their interest. On promoting with the US government they have spent over $10 million and participated in campaign to put off SOPA/PIPA lawgiving in the year 2012.

Protect your idea, but how ? – You shouldn’t be sharing your idea with anyone. Even though, you feel that it may not need any protection.

6. A puff-up is not needed all the time

As shared above that Google believes in mouth publicity and not in creating a big hysteria about it. We have seen and heard about a lot of other entrepreneurs talking big about their any new venture or project. It sounds like the next big event on the planet. It is small to talk big but big to show your worth via your work.

We have a reason of not doing so :

First impression must be good - When someone talks before showing the results, first impression of that person is not that good, and the opportunity is lost in talks. I know it is very tempting to share with all known people about your plans and get appreciated; most of the people do it. Break the news before happening. Wait for the right time to disclose the news, better to do it after the success of it.

Don’t cage your thoughts - Till the mission is set don’t share it and don’t let it be influenced by anyone. If at the end you decide to change the plan anyways for the better, you don’t have to think twice or get affected by peoples expectation, who know about the plan already.

Improve and be more committed - It is seen that when we talk about and are loud about our plans we care less to achieve it as we are only busy talking about it, also we lose the focus.

7. Don’t be very serious that you forget yourself

You may think that Google being the number 1 website, must be very strict and straight in there roll. But, you are mistaken dear. They also are funny and witty at times and it’s a good trait of a complete personality.

The very first prank they played was in the month of April in 2000. MentalPlex was the first prank they claimed as very new feature of Google to check your personality and mental strength and based on that data they were supposed to tell you which site were you looking for.

Why do you think they are need to do this. It is not a waste of time and money but a moral boost and a little change over for the Google followers and the staff even, the little change brought some new life in the daily routine work.

Not to be robotic - How do you feel when you have to respond to an IVR system over the phone, that to when you are looking for some personal attention for some problem that you have? Likewise, when you have people approaching you for any reason, it is your responsibility to handle them carefully and provide them with human touch and not mechanic.

8. Don’t be selfish

It is Google’s yet another policy. Here, if they really wanted to just make money they could have easily taken advantage of people’s need. But they refused any such short cuts that would irritate every other visitor with loads of pop up or jazzy ads refraining them from the actual content they are looking for. This motto was decided in the year 2004 and is still a firm believer. This policy had a great impression on their ads. Google’s search results only show the related ads, and are also labeled as sponsored.

Doing good to make money - Google says that it can make money even by doing well. I do agree with this, as it is not really necessary to be selfish all the time to be successful. You can try this as well, as you must have tried a lot in the past to be a success in your niche. Just by being good, straight, and simple will sure pull you success, may be late but sure.
